Florida Marlins (45-44) at Arizona Diamondbacks (38-50)
Sunday July 12, 2009 4:10 PM EST
Starters: Josh Johnson (R)-(7-2, 2.82) vs. Doug Davis (L)-(4-8, 2.97)
Mark's Pick: Florida -115
Just about anytime I can get decent odds on Johnson I look at it hard. He is the main reason Florida is still hanging around in the NL East and he faces another tough customer in Davies who is a good pitcher in his own right. The one question I ask is can the Marlins get some runs against Davies.
Johnson has not allowed more than three runs in his last ten starts, and Florida is 8-2 in that span. He has gone less than six innings in his last 10 just once and keeps the ball in the park. Johnson faced the D-Backs once this year allowing two runs on four hits in six plus innings.
Davis is much better than his won/loss record and has the misfortune of playing for a team that has scored four or less runs in 7 of his last 10 starts. Arizona hasn't done a whole lot of winning over that period going just 2-8. He is just 2-6 lifetime against Florida and more importantly 0-2 between ‘08 and ‘09 which is a better indicator.
I think that Johnson throws better against Arizona than Davies does against the Fish. There is no doubt about which team is better and even though Florida has struggled in Arizona, I'm taking the Marlins.
